It's been a long time, I know, and there are many chapters I owe comments on.  But today I am giving two midterms, and I know my time will be limited after this.  So here is this transitional chapter:

Chapter 15.5: Goodbye To All That.

Gaah, I just keep getting farther and farther behind!

Those wildfires in Santa Barbara, how close are they to you? If you need to evacuate, you and the kitties can stay with me.

It happens. I'm way behind, too.

Aw, thanks. The fires are far away right now--it's the air quality that's a bear. And of course the cats want to cuddle, but they set off my asthma. But basically, all is well.

Heh. I still have nooooo idea where other cities in California are, aside from "north." West of me is Pacific Ocean, east of me is desert, south of me is Downtown San Diego and Mexico. Everything else is North. Navigation was so much easier in Michigan, where you just pointed to a spot on your right palm, or made references to The Thumb or The Rabbit's Ear. Bad Axe is in the thumb. Houghton is in the rabbit's ear. The Soo is in the rabbit's ass. Lansing is in the middle of the palm. Alpena is the tip of the middle finger.

As an East Coaster, it took me forever to get used to the idea that the ocean was to the WEST of me. My parents said the same thing: people would ask where I was and they would say "30 miles west of Los Angeles" and correct themselves, "no, thirty miles EAST of Los Angeles." What they were really saying was "30 miles inland from large coastal city" (people from NJ are used to explaining distances from New York and Philadelphia.)
